Tailor your CV to cloud engineer jobs

A cloud engineer CV is read for what you built in the cloud and how well it's run: the platform, how it's secured, what it costs. Match the advert's provider and services, and show the architecture decisions you made, not just the services you've touched.

What Cloud engineer adverts ask for

What these adverts usually ask for, from experience. RoleScaler's job index doesn't have enough of these adverts yet to count them honestly.

  • One provider in depth (AWS, Azure or Google Cloud), named the way the advert names it
  • Infrastructure as code: Terraform, or the provider's own (CloudFormation, Bicep)
  • Networking: VPCs or VNets, DNS, load balancing, private connectivity
  • Identity and access: IAM roles and policies, least privilege
  • Cost: tagging, budgets, rightsizing
  • Containers and Kubernetes (EKS, AKS or GKE)
  • Scripting: Python, Bash or PowerShell
  • Certifications, sometimes required: AWS, Azure or Google Cloud associate level

What your CV has to make obvious

  • What you built or migrated, and its size
  • Security decisions you made: access, networking, secrets
  • Money: anything you did that cut or controlled the bill
  • Which provider you know deeply, rather than all three a little

One bullet, before and after

Before

Experience with AWS services including EC2, S3, RDS and Lambda.

After

Moved a reporting system from on-premises servers to AWS (RDS, Lambda, S3) in Terraform, and brought its monthly cost down by about a third with scheduled scaling.

Write the work you did with the services, and only the outcome you can stand behind. If cost wasn't your part, leave it out.

Common mistakes

A list of services

Everyone has used EC2 and S3. What you built with them, and why that design, is what separates you.

Claiming every provider

Most cloud adverts want one. Depth in the one they name beats a line saying AWS, Azure and GCP.

Certifications instead of work

A certificate gets you past a filter; the bullets under your jobs get you the interview. Put the cert in its own line, not as your main evidence.

Interview questions to prepare for

  • Design a highly available web application on your main cloud provider. Talk me through it.
  • How do you structure IAM so that people have only what they need?
  • Tell me about a time you reduced cloud costs. How did you find the waste?
  • How do you connect a cloud network securely to an on-premises one?
  • How do you test infrastructure-as-code changes before they reach production?

RoleScaler's interview prep builds questions like these from your own CV and the job you're applying for.
