Tailor your CV to DevOps engineer jobs
A DevOps engineer CV gets read for three things: what you automated, what you kept running, and what changed because of it. Name the tools the advert names, but attach each one to something you actually built or ran, and say what happened next.

What your CV has to make obvious
- Pipelines you built or rebuilt, and what they replaced
- Infrastructure you defined as code, and how much of it
- Time on call: what broke, and what you changed so it didn't again
- Who you worked with: developers, security, the business
One bullet, before and after
Before
Responsible for CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins and Docker.
After
Moved 12 services from hand-run Jenkins jobs to GitHub Actions pipelines with Docker builds, so a release went from an afternoon to about 20 minutes.
Use the numbers only if they're true. If you don't know them, say what changed: 'releases no longer needed someone on hand to run them' is still far stronger than 'responsible for'.
Common mistakes
A tool list with no work attached
Twenty logos in a skills box tell a reader you've heard of them. Two bullets that say what you ran with them tell them you can do the job.
Writing 'responsible for'
It describes the job description, not you. Start with what you did: built, moved, cut, automated, fixed.
Hiding the on-call work
Incidents you handled and the fixes that followed are some of the best evidence a DevOps CV can have. Most people leave them out.
Interview questions to prepare for
- Walk me through a pipeline you built. What would you change about it now?
- Tell me about an incident you were on call for. What did you change afterwards?
- How do you manage Terraform state across several environments and people?
- A deploy has made the site slow, but nothing is erroring. Where do you start?
- How have you made it easier for developers to ship without asking you?
