Tailor your CV to site reliability engineer jobs

An SRE CV is read for evidence that systems got more reliable because of you. Show the service levels you set or kept, the incidents you led, the toil you removed, and the monitoring you built, with the numbers you actually have.

What your CV has to make obvious

  • Service level objectives you defined, met or changed
  • Incidents you led or reviewed, and what changed after them
  • Toil you automated away, and roughly how much
  • Monitoring and alerting you built, and the noise you removed

One bullet, before and after

Before

Worked on monitoring with Prometheus and Grafana.

After

Rebuilt the payment service's alerts in Prometheus around two SLOs, cutting pages from about 40 a week to 6 without missing an outage.

If you don't have the page counts, describe the change instead: 'alerts now fire on customer impact, not on CPU'. Never estimate a number you can't explain.

Common mistakes

Uptime claims with nothing behind them

'Ensured 99.99% availability' invites the question how. Say what you did and let the number follow, if you can stand behind it.

No incident stories

Postmortems are SRE's core evidence. One incident, your part in it and the fix is worth more than a page of tools.

Monitoring as a tool list

Prometheus, Grafana and PagerDuty are the stack, not the achievement. What did the alerts catch, and what did you stop paging people for?

Interview questions to prepare for

  • How would you set an SLO for a service that doesn't have one?
  • Talk me through the worst incident you've been part of, from first alert to postmortem.
  • What's the difference between a good alert and a noisy one? Give an example.
  • How do you decide between shipping features and paying down reliability work?
  • What toil have you removed, and how did you choose it?
